Then Job answered and said, WEBThen Job answered,

I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all. WEB“I have heard many such things. You are all miserable comforters!

Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest? WEBShall vain words have an end? Or what provokes you that you answer?

I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. WEBI also could speak as you do. If your soul were in my soul’s place, I could join words together against you, and shake my head at you,

But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief. WEBbut I would strengthen you with my mouth. The solace of my lips would relieve you.

Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased? WEB“Though I speak, my grief is not subsided. Though I forbear, what am I eased?

But now he hath made me weary: thou hast made desolate all my company. WEBBut now, God, you have surely worn me out. You have made all my company desolate.

And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face. WEBYou have shriveled me up. This is a witness against me. My leanness rises up against me. It testifies to my face.

He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me. WEBHe has torn me in his wrath and persecuted me. He has gnashed on me with his teeth. My adversary sharpens his eyes on me.

They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. WEBThey have gaped on me with their mouth. They have struck me on the cheek reproachfully. They gather themselves together against me.

God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked. WEBGod delivers me to the ungodly, and casts me into the hands of the wicked.

I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. WEBI was at ease, and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his target.

His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground. WEBHis archers surround me. He splits my kidneys apart, and does not spare. He pours out my bile on the ground.

He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a giant. WEBHe breaks me with breach on breach. He runs at me like a giant.

I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust. WEBI have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and have thrust my horn in the dust.

My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; WEBMy face is red with weeping. Deep darkness is on my eyelids,

Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is pure. WEBalthough there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure.

O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no place. WEB“Earth, don’t cover my blood. Let my cry have no place to rest.

Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high. WEBEven now, behold, my witness is in heaven. He who vouches for me is on high.

My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God. WEBMy friends scoff at me. My eyes pour out tears to God,

O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour! WEBthat he would maintain the right of a man with God, of a son of man with his neighbor!

When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return. WEBFor when a few years have come, I will go the way of no return.
