1Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?WEB“Can you draw out Leviathan with a fish hook, or press down his tongue with a cord?

2Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?WEBCan you put a rope into his nose, or pierce his jaw through with a hook?

3Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?WEBWill he make many petitions to you, or will he speak soft words to you?

4Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?WEBWill he make a covenant with you, that you should take him for a servant forever?

5Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?WEBWill you play with him as with a bird? Or will you bind him for your girls?

6Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?WEBWill traders barter for him? Will they part him among the merchants?

7Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?WEBCan you fill his skin with barbed irons, or his head with fish spears?

8Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.WEBLay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more.

9Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?WEBBehold, the hope of him is in vain. Won’t one be cast down even at the sight of him?

10None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?WEBNone is so fierce that he dare stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me?

11Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.WEBWho has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine.

12I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.WEB“I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, nor his mighty strength, nor his goodly frame.

13Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?WEBWho can strip off his outer garment? Who will come within his jaws?

14Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.WEBWho can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror.

15His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.WEBStrong scales are his pride, shut up together with a close seal.

16One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.WEBOne is so near to another, that no air can come between them.

17They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.WEBThey are joined to one another. They stick together, so that they can’t be pulled apart.

18By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.WEBHis sneezing flashes out light. His eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

19Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.WEBOut of his mouth go burning torches. Sparks of fire leap out.

20Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.WEBOut of his nostrils a smoke goes, as of a boiling pot over a fire of reeds.

21His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.WEBHis breath kindles coals. A flame goes out of his mouth.

22In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.WEBThere is strength in his neck. Terror dances before him.

23The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.WEBThe flakes of his flesh are joined together. They are firm on him. They can’t be moved.

24His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.WEBHis heart is as firm as a stone, yes, firm as the lower millstone.

25When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.WEBWhen he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid. They retreat before his thrashing.

26The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.WEBIf one attacks him with the sword, it can’t prevail; nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft.

27He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.WEBHe counts iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.

28The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.WEBThe arrow can’t make him flee. Sling stones are like chaff to him.

29Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.WEBClubs are counted as stubble. He laughs at the rushing of the javelin.

30Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.WEBHis undersides are like sharp potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.

31He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.WEBHe makes the deep to boil like a pot. He makes the sea like a pot of ointment.

32He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.WEBHe makes a path shine after him. One would think the deep had white hair.

33Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.WEBOn earth there is not his equal, that is made without fear.

34He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.WEBHe sees everything that is high. He is king over all the sons of pride.”
